Nowadays, a lot of people, especially students, use energy drinks to lift their performance. Most students treat energy drinks as petty things because they do not see the trouble these could cause them and they focus on the alertness that could be provided.

Fast facts

Drinking one can or bottle of energy drink is just like chugging more than five 12-ounce cans of soda. Caffeine is no better than candy that affects all tissues in the body. Whether you feel it or not, each organ in your body could be involved in the acts of caffeine in different ways.

It is recorded by the American Association of Poison Control Centers that there was a total of around 2, 600 calls from children or adolescents who had inquiries on caffeine. Out of that total, 2, 345 needed evaluation and treatment on caffeine related sickness or disorder

From experience

A doctor named Dr. Holly Benjamin stated that a lot of students in college have no proper understanding of what the harmful effects of energy drinks are. An example would be a student from DePaul University, Kari Stohmaier, who was 18 years old. According to Kari, she regularly drinks energy drinks prior to a band concert. She adds that she feels ill when she drinks too much so she does not drink too frequently.

The reason of students

It is an unquestionable fact that everyone everywhere wants to have a boost here and there. Most of these people think that coffee but the number of people relying on energy drinks is also catching up. This group is commonly made out of younger people under the age of 19. The sharpness and energy they gain leads them to use energy drinks for studying or cramming for exams or for improving their performance in sports if they are athletes.

Yes, energy drinks are effective in those areas but this could spell trouble for students. A lot of people have discovered that it is hard to sleep if they drink at night or if they drink too much during the day. This is where students could fall. If your purpose for using it is to cram for an exam, then you have defeated your purpose because the sleep you lost could be as vital as your study. Studies have proven that if you lack the proper amount of sleep, your cognitive power could also be affected.

Some effects

The prescribed maximum amount of caffeine intake per day for adults is 400 milligrams but this quantity is not necessarily good for adolescents and children. If you want to stay awake, it is better to ingest some coffee because it is hot so you would drink it slowly which is in contrast with energy drinks that are cold so they are imbibed faster.

One of the most significant problems from energy drinks is dehydration. Caffeine dehydrated your body so energy drinks are no-nos for those doing strenuous activity. Children and adolescents should look out for this and must limit their use. This particularly applies to athletes because they commonly do not distinguish energy drinks from sports drinks. Remember that sports drinks restore electrolytes lost in sweat and keep water in your body while energy drinks dehydrate you because of caffeine.
